'First Man' soars as tale of Neil Armstrong and stoic heroism

If stoic heroism sounds pretty good right about now, "First Man" lands at a welcome time. The "La La Land" reunion of Ryan Gosling and director Damien Chazelle produces a soaring, IMAX-worthy look at Neil Armstrong's life in the decade leading up to the moon landing, providing a reminder that fulfilling John F. Kennedy's vision was as much about grit, guts and determination as any feat of engineering.

'Titans' launches DC battle to turn heroes into subscribers

"Titans" is a superhero hybrid -- a live-action series that essentially weds the CW's DC Comics-inspired fare with the gritty, premium-cable approach of Marvel's Netflix dramas. That's not a bad formula, and it yields an entertaining, heavily serialized show; whether it's reason enough to ante up for DC Universe, the new dedicated streaming service, is another matter.

'Watergate' looks to Nixon's past, with an eye on the present

One misguided decision can partially offset a whole lot of good ones, and so it is with "Watergate," a comprehensive trip into the way-back machine, which makes the serious misstep of dramatically reenacting the Nixon tapes. Receiving a theatrical run in advance of a three-night stand on History channel, it's still worthwhile as a dense look at America's past -- and in terms of checking executive actions, perhaps a preview of its future.

HBO's 'Camping' isn't worth staying indoors to watch

For those who have felt a void in the realm of TV self-absorption since "Girls" finished its run, "Camping," from that show's producers, might be the trip for you. Otherwise, this HBO adaptation of a British series, starring Jennifer Garner, makes a pretty good case for turning off the set and getting outdoors.

'Beautiful Boy' sees addiction ordeal through a father's eyes

Based on twin memoirs by father and son, "Beautiful Boy" is a grim fact-based account about the horrors of drug addiction, conveying the shame of the addict and, perhaps most forcefully, the guilt and frustration of his father. Anchored by Steve Carell and Timothee Chalamet, the story can't entirely escape an old-fashioned TV movie feel -- which isn't bad, necessarily, but makes this one of those films that isn't worth rushing out to see.

'The Romanoffs' pedigree doesn't join ranks of TV royalty

History might be kinder to "The Romanoffs," but in the current moment, this loosely connected anthology series looks like a self-indulgent lark -- with "Mad Men" creator Matthew Weiner reveling in the creative latitude all those Emmys earned him, getting Amazon to finance a project whose appeal might be even narrower than students of early 20th-century Russian history.

CW's 'All American,' 'Charmed' get in the game, casting spells

The CW again starts school a little late, but with some of the more promising players in this year's freshmen class: "All American," a soap opera that weaves issues of race and class into its central plot about a high-school football star; and "Charmed," a slick but reasonably faithful reboot from the producers of "Jane the Virgin," with a trio of witches that might actually be worth hunting.

'22 July' captures horror of extremism, and hope in its aftermath

Paul Greengrass' gritty, live-wire directing style is something of a trademark, and it's put to efficient use in "22 July," a layered, dense look at the savage terrorist attack that rocked Norway on that date in 2011. Telling the story from multiple angles, Greengrass' spare, sobering film -- premiering simultaneously in select theaters and on Netflix -- seeks and mostly succeeds in highlighting extremism while finding humanity and resolve within the grief and chaos.
